Tampa Bay Lightning: From Pretenders to Contenders

No doubt the Tampa Bay Lightning have been the busiest team in the NHL offseason. Starting with new co-owners, Barry and Coolis, the Tampa Bay organization has transformed its team, representing one of the largest overhaul in NHL history. Along with new coaching and a new general manager, the roster changes have been even greater:

Notable Signings:

F Ryan Malone (7-year, $31.5 million contract)
F Gary Roberts (1-year contract)
F Vaclav Prospal (multi-year contract)
F Radim Vrbata (3 years, $9 million)
F Adam Hall (3-year, $1.8 million)
G Olaf Kolzig (1-year, $1.5 million)
F Ryan Craig (2-years, $1.575 million)
D Janne Niskala (1-year, $600,000)
F Mark Recchi (1-year, $1.25 million)
F Brandon Bochenski (two-year contract)
D Andrew Hutchinson (2-year contract)
F Chris Gratton (1-year contract)

Trades:

Acquired Vaclav Prospal from the Philadelphia Flyers for a 2008 seventh-round pick and a 2009 conditional fourth-round pick
Acquired defenceman Matt Carle, defenceman Ty Wishart, a first round selection in the 2009 entry draft and a fourth round selection in the 2010 entry draft for defencemen Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich from the San Jose Sharks.

The Lightning, have also solidified signing their captain, Lecavalier. However, their signings and moves have not come without some negative remarks from Dan Boyle, who said he was threatened and mistreated before being dealt to San Jose.

Though there have been many changes, and though they seem pretty positive for the team, will the team gel in time for the season? The Lightning, will of course, be the team to watch in the 2008 and 2009 season. Winners of the Stanley Cup 4 years ago, and led by a new coach, Barry Melrose, and the first overall selection, Steve Stamkos, the Lightning look poised to rise to the top once again.

Will the $150 million the owners invested in their players, will the Lightning succeed? Though they may not win, they have a strong chance of finishing top 3 in the East. The Lightning, have turned their organization around, which brings speculation as to why the Toronto Maple Leafs have not done the same.

The Lightning, finishing last, were in the same position as the Leafs, but have clearly done a better job. Well, we'll see.

Joe Nieuwendyk as Assistant GM

Leafs added Joe Nieuwendyk to the head office. The veteran, will become the 'special assistant to the general manager.'

Nieuy: Has experience? Yes. Is he respected? Yes. Will he become a success? We do not know. Is he another John Ferguson who does not know the league? We do not know. And will he even do anything in the office? Obviously some minor changes, but anything innovative and new?

While some fans are screaming for joy, this writer is a skeptic. Leaf fans are desperate for anything. They want change, and they believe a move in the front office will help change our fortunes. But will Nieuy, actually make great changes for this organization? My answer is... no. No offense to Joe, he is not a GM. He is a hockey player, and hockey players are not brewed to become GMs. They are brewed to help the organization on the ice, not off the ice.

Does adding Nieuwyndyk actually do anything for the leafs? How many times has Mats Sundin made phone calls to different players and has gotten rejected. But that is because the Leafs have a bad rep. Perhaps adding Nieuy will bolster the damaged rep of the Maple Leafs Organization.

Some others say that Nieuwyndyk can become the Leafs' future GM. No offense, that's really not going to happen for a long time. Maybe 4-5 years down the road, but even then, chances are slim.

Nieuy, is basically your classic 'poster boy' sent to help a poorly structured system. He will be the face, but will not actually conrtibute much in terms of new signings or moves.

In short, Nieuy will not have an enormous impact on the Leafs, but will rather help revitalize the image of the leafs. Of course, what I'm stating is completely my opinion. I would love to hear from you guys.

New Number 1 Seed?

Rafael Nadal's epic victory over Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final allowed him to significantly narrow the gap at the top of the ATP rankings.

Before the tournament Federer's lead fell from 6,900 pts to 5,755. And during the tournament, it fell 545 points more.

Nadal, defeating Federer after an epic 5 game match, by a score of 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7, on the other hand, has been steadily rising in the point total in the ATP rankings.

Thus, the longest final in Wimbeldon history, partially thanks to a 48 minute rain delay, was finished in style, with two of the biggest heavyweights in tennis.

Nadal, who was defeated by Federer in last year's Wimbeldon, was extremely close to winning. Nadal, finally won a grad slam title not on the clay, and defeated the King of the grass, Federer.

The super Spaniard dominated Federer in a 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 triumph last month in the French Open final, and on Sunday survived an epic comeback to earn his fifth Grand Slam title and deny Federer his 13th. Nadal also became the first Spaniard to win on the famed lawns of the London slam since Manuel Santana in 1966.

This marked the 18th meeting between the two rivals. Nadal now holds a 12-6 advantage, including 4-0 this year. He is also 10-4 against Federer when the two meet for a title.

Rising Salary of Youngsters in the NHL

Brian Burke, once again was disgusted by Kevin Lowe's move to sign young players at high prices. Burke, believeing that Lowe has raised the standards and price levels for young players, states that Lowe has hurt other teams.

Last year, with the massive signing of Dustin Penner, Burke was infuriated. Ever since that day, Burke and Lowe have been jabbing and making fun of each other.

Burke, after signing Corey Perry to a 5 yr deal, worth 26.63 million, stated: "You go right now from entry-level to what used to be the third contract, thanks to two offer sheets from Kevin Lowe... Thanks to the Oilers, the second contract has dissapeared."

Inflating prices have always occured in eveyr league, not just hockey. But Lowe has greatly increased salaries by offering them an unusual amount of money. Should there be a cap for these young players? Should these players prove themselves before being given a large salary? Is Brian Burke just being a whiner (he does after all, possess a large amount of young players)?

Leafs Grab Grabovski

Toronto announced that they had traded for Mikhail Grabovski in exchange for the rights to Greg Pateryn and a second round draft pick in 2010 from the Montreal Canadians.

The German center, who impressed the Maple Leafs will immediately join training camp and will most likely be a starter in the Leafs' regular roster.

The 24 yr old, scored 3 goals and had 6 assists in 24 games with Montreal last year.

Raps Claim Calderon

Today, Calderon released a statement on his website indicating that he has a preliminary agreement in place to return to the Toronto Raptors.

Calderon, who led the league with a 5.38 assist to turnover ratio, averaging 11.2 pts per game, 8.3 assists, and 1.1 steals in just more than 30 minutes per game, was the playmaker for the Raptors last year. A team player, (Calderon did not complain that he split the time with T.J. Ford, who was clearly the weaker one of the two, and is a pass first, score second type of pointgaurd - a trait that is hard to find in today's NBA)/

In addition to Calderon, Colangelo has also reached an agreement with Roko Ukic (the 24-yr old Croatian will back up Calderon in the pointguard position) and are also currently negotiating with Hassan Adams (6"4, 3-man who played with in the Italian League).

Clearly Colangelo is not afraid of the 'European type players'. This team, which does not lack in offense, lacks in defense. Is Colangelo taking the right risks in bringing in these Europeans? The Raptors, who do well in the season, do not really do well in playoffs... Perhaps it's because they lack grit that the North American Players have?

The Raptors have signed O'neal, but can he alone turn around their defense? The Raptor perimeter defense, is terrible, constantly double teaming for no particular reason and letting team shoot easy jump shots.

Only time can tell if Colangelo is doing the right thing. Though he is different than other GM's - no GM has signed this many European players, Colangelo may be making a poor decision. But perhaps he is making a great decision - perhaps he is building a franchise that will dominate come 3/4 years down the road.

The Raps have promise, but will that promise come through?

Canadian Hockey Teams in the Offseason

With the Canadian hockey teams buying and selling in the offseason, different teams look to do certain things. This report will analyze each team's decisions and the direction it's heading.

Montreal Canadians - Bob Gainey has $14 Million in salary room but also needs to take care of 5 restricted free agents (Hlak, Kostitsyn), etc.. Clearly, with the bid for Mats Sundin, Gainey is looking for a first line forward or center. The team believes that its core players will be strong enough to make another strong run ot the Stanley Cup playoffs and does not look to make many new changes. Several options for the Canadiens include Marian Hossa, Brian Rolston, and Brian Malone.

Ottawa Senators - Brian Murray will most likely be busy this offseason. Wade Redden, Brian McGratton, and Ray Emery are gone and Murray has plenty of money. The team plans to execute one of the biggest overhauls in team history. With plenty of unrestricted free agents (Sean Donovan, Luke Richardson, Mike Commodore, Corey Stillman, etc.) Murray has plenty of options, but he needs to find plenty of players who will most likely leave Ottawa.

Vancouver Canucks - 17 players signed. Over $20 million in cap room. They need everything - from forwards to defense. Not enough depth in all positions except in net (Roberto Luongo). Unrestricted free agents, Morrison and Naslund, both may not return to Vancouver. The Sedin twins, will also want larger contracts and extensions. Several options include Pavol Demitra, Marian Hossa, Brian Campbell, and Ryan Malone for Mike McGillis.

Toronto Maple Leafs - Don't look for the Buds to be making any huge moves this year, but look for plenty of smaller changes. Though Fletcher has hinted that he is unafraid to purchase high-priced players, it is unlikely. Fletcher will most likely try and obtain some grit on the blueline, a back-up goaltender, and some 3rd and 4th line forwards. Because Fletcher is not a permanent GM, and may be replaced in the next year, large signings will most likely occur after the Buds have a permanent GM. For now, Fletcher will attempt to obtain low salary, players that can potentially support a stronger cast in the future. Look for Fletcher to get 26-30 yr old free agents that will still be around in 4 years for a potential Stanley Cup run.

Oilers - 2 needs: a top forward, and physical presence. For the forward, Ryan Malone provides both, but the Oilers will most likely be outbidded as the price of Malone goes up. Look for the Oilers to make little changes with a few additions. They have yet to sign unrestricted free agents Pitkanen and Stoll. But manager Kevin Lowe feels comfortable with his current lineup and roster, and does not feel the need to make many changes.

Calgary Flames - Daryl Sutter has signed 4 potential unrestricted free agents. Come July 1st, however, the players 'will be given a chance to play'. With the recent 'youth movement' (Nystrom, Makelaine - I do not know how to spell them), Sutter may sign Nolan (he has already signed Conroy) to foster the youth movement.

NBA Draft 2008

Thursday night, and a fresh batch of rookies are about to take their first step into the NBA. This draft was the hardest to predict in recent history as players, after the Derrick Rose-Michael Beasley (or would it be Beasley-Rose?) 1-2 duo, were being predicted to go anywhere from 3 to 18. My Raptors, of course, traded their only 1st round pick this season for Jermaine O'Neal and two spare knee-caps, but picked up Indiana's 2nd round pick. I'm still talking myself into the trade, and I think I'm just about there now...think of the cap space in 2 years...

The draft began as predicted, with Rose going to Chicago at #1 and Beasley going to South Beach (um I mean Miami) at #2 (Warning: Beasley's liver may not survive past second year). Mayo at #3 to Minnesota was a good pick as he is easily the 3rd-best player in this class. Of course Mayo was later dealt to Memphis, but more on that later. The first surprise came with the reach on Russell Westbrook by the Sonics at #4. A solid pick by the Sonics though, as he solves their PG problem, and will be a great assistant to Durant in Oklahoma City. I think the city of Seattle just committed mass suicide. Kevin Love was picked #5 by Memphis but was shipped to Minnesota in the Mayo trade. Minnesota also got Mike Miller, and both teams traded terrible contracts so that neither team really won out in terms of cap space.

The rest of the lottery held a few highlights. Danilo Gallinari getting booed by the New York crowd was a great way to start his career. These Knicks fans are looking for results, I think it's referred to as 'Post-Isaiah Syndrome'. Gallinari better get on an all-rookie team, or things may turn ugly in the big apple. Eric Gordon went from one bad situation in Indiana University to another bad situation with the LA Clippers. He's a good fit there, assuming he doesn't go crazy after a few years of seeing the organization make bad decision after bad decision. Joe Alexander to the Bucks was interesting, he'll get little playing time behind Richard Jefferson, but maybe they'll find a way to play them both at the same time. Either way he's a solid player for Scott Skiles to use. Brook Lopez to New Jersey was a solid pick, he can learn how to fake an injury from Vince Carter and, if he can survive two years of seeing his team dump salary, play with Lebron James of the Brooklyn Nets. Jerryd Bayless was a STEAL, too bad the Pacers then turned around and gave the pick away for Brandon Rush and peanuts to the Blazers, who are swindling everybody in the league.

More highlights: Pacers used the Raptors pick to select Roy Hibbert, a solid center who underperformed last year, but might single-handedly outperform Jermaine O'Neal overall the next two seasons...(cap space in two years, cap space in two years...), Darrell Arthur was the last man in the green room this year and, after being dealt around the league, ended up in Memphis, a great pickup for them. Arthur's gonna be at least a solid rotation guy in this league, no doubt about it.

The second round had big names like Mario Chalmers (a championship-winning PG who is now giving the ball up to Dwyane Wade, Shawn Marion and Beasley in Miami), Chris Douglas-Roberts (who went to the Nets, another solid pick-up for them), Bill Walker (who somehow went to the World Champion Celtics), DeAndre Jordan (who was predicted by some to go in the top 10, a steal by the Clippers), Joey Dorsey (a bruiser who went to the Rockets) and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (a solid defender for the Bucks who could turn out to be the next Tayshaun Prince).

The Raptors picked up Nathan Jawai with the Pacers pick, which was actually a very good pick. He could turn out to be better than Hibbert down the road. Overall the winners were Chicago, Miami, Portland, Memphis and Seattle. Then again, who knows how this class will turn out down the road. My prediction for Rookie of the Year isn't even technically part of this class: Greg Oden, with Derrick Rose coming second. Beasley will be too busy partying and playing third fiddle to Wade and Marion to contend.

Euro Final

Spain Vs. Germany - Coming This Sunday

It looks like Spain is the stronger team coming into the Euro Final but I believe we should look at it closer. Clearly, the game cannot be won by one player or even a group of 4 players - all players from both sides must be analyzed. I will be giving pluses and minuses to the different players.

Casillas/Lehmann (Goalies):

+1 to Casillas for his efforts in the penalty shots, and overall performance. Although he only had to make 1 or 2 saves against the Russians, he did it, keeping the clean sheet. On the other hand, -1 to Lehmann for his sometimes awkward saves, poor judgment, and extremley poor goalie kicks. However, Lehmann in the past, has stepped up in big games, will he step up again?

Puyol and Marchena/Metzelder and Mertesacker (Centre Backs):

I'm going to have to give Spain's centre backs a 0 on this one. Although Puyol and Marchena have shown they can hold off strikers like Pavlyuchenko, they have failed to hold off the likes of Ibrahimovic. They have not been tested by top quality strikers (Toni played extremley poorly that game) and it is difficult to determine whether they can perform or not. Although Puyol is one of the best in the game, his partner Marchena has never been pressured - we have never seen Marchena in this type of situation before. +1 to Mertesacker and Metzelder although some would disagree. The pair have been extremley solid at the back (their wingbacks have been poor defensively). Also, the pair are extremely involved in set-plays, where they usually are taller than most players. Look for the two German centre-backs to contribute and possibly score on free kick headers.

Capdevilla and Ramos/Lahm, Jansen, and Fritz (Wing backs):

+ 2 to Spain's wingbacks, while 0 to Germany's wingbacks. While Ramos and Capdevilla haveboth been constatnly pushing up and providing the Midfield with even more options, Lahm and company have been inconsistent at times. Although Lahm has played extremley well, the other German backs on the other side (Jansen and Fritz), are poor defensively and do not possess the same skill as Lahm, Capdevilla, and Ramos. The wingbacks on Spain are also great defenders - they run up with the play and also get back. This one clearly goes to Spain.

Xavi/Ballack (Centre attacking Midfields):

+ 2 to Xavi and + 1 to Ballack. Xavi has crafted every Spanish attack , except when he got substituted and Ballack has looked 'out of the game' many times. Although Ballack has proven effective on set plays, he has never really controlled the game. Xavi, on the other hand, controls the pace and mood of the game. Look for Ballack to step up - if he does not, Germany is done.

Senna/Frings (Centre defensive Midfields):

+ 1 to Senna and + 2 to Frings. Senna, has proven to eveyrone, that a no namer can come to this tournament and dominate. Sennaa is the enforcer for the Spanish and has clearly done just that. Senna blends well with his fellow midfielders but is not an attacking asset. He tends to stay back while others create offensively. Frings on the other hand, is arguably the best at his position. Contributing both offensively and acting as a wall defensively, Frings is a versatile and strong player. As Germany's corner taker as well, Frings has not only been the defensive stalwart, but a major contributor to Germany's offence. Frings, must be able to control Xavi in the game, if not, Spain will control the momentum of the game.

Silva/Podolski (Left Wingers):

+ 2 to Silva and + 3 to Podolski. Silva, the very left footed winger has dominated every game. He has scored, passed, set up plays, and dazzled. He is the whole package. I would take him on my team. On the other hand, Podolski has managed to score many goals, showing that he can play up front and in the midfield. Podolski's size and strength have allowed him to be in great position for shots and rarely misses. The strike of Podolski may be able to change the game, while Silva, although he has a very decent shot, will most likely not contribute to the scoring sheet.

Iniesta/Freidrich and Fritz (Right Wingers):

+ 1 to Iniesta and 0 to the Right wingers from Germany. Iniesta, although the weakest of all the Spanish midfield, is far more effective than any German right winger. Both Freidrich and Fritz, tend to not create as much offence as Iniesta and tend to stay back a bit more. However, that is not to say that they are not as fast, strong, and skilled as Iniesta. Iniesta has excellent passing while the German Right Wingers are less 'offesnvely minded'. Look for Iniesta to be a strong opponent for Podolski and look for the Right Wing to be difficult to attack for Silva.

Torres and Villa/Klose and Schwiensteiger (Strikers):

Torres and Villa have been the best pair of strikers in the whole tournament - but is Villa fit to play on Sunday after his injury and sibstitution in the semi-final game against Russa? Villa, on pace to win the golden boot has dominated defenses, while Torres, not to be outdone, has equally been strong and quick upfront. These two, will cause problems in the German defense and must be contained. However, that is easier said than done. + 2 for the Spanish strikers. Germany's strikers, although extremely strong, cannot compete with the Spanish strikers. Klose, at times has been the set-up man, but really needs to start scoring rather than passing. Schweinsteiger, may be perhaps as good as Torres or Villa in terms of skill and finishing, but he is not as fast or strong as the Spanish forwards. However, unlike the Spanish attack, Schweinsteiger and Klose will cause very little problems for Puyol and company. Klose is slow and Schweinsteiger is not fast enough. + 1 to the German Strikers. They have gotten the team this far and deserve some credit.

Fabregas, Guiza, Xabi Alonzo/Mario Gomez, Hitzelsperger, Jansen, Fritz (Key Substitutes):

Spanish substitues + 1 and 0 for german substitutes for good reason. Fabregas and company have dominated, and played equally as good as the starters while Germany's bench, in comparison to Spain's bench is less effective.

Overall: the score is:

Spain: 12
Germany: 5

In the Euro Final, all fingers point to Spain. But I will always take 2:1 odds for Germany. Anything can happen, look for an exciting final for 2008.

Spain Vs Russia

Spain will win. Russia cannot keep upsetting teams. Midfield of Spain is much more powerful 82% completion rate - most passes in the whole tournament.

Russian Def. is strong, but not strong enuff to hold a hot David Villa or the steadfast Torres.

Look for Ramos to dominate the right wing.

Spain takes it I think.

Comments to follow after the game...

Cliff Fletcher

Cliff Fletcher has raised a few eyebrows this off-season. He has gotten Schenn, Mayers - big guys with brusing hits. Got rid of Wellwood, Raycroft, and Tucker. And may get rid of Pavel Kubina. Fletcher has finally done what the Leafs need most - that is getting rid of the old, bringing in the new. A complete change. Fletcher will most likely get rid of a couple of more players (Sundin and company) before the beggining of the season.

No more bandaids. Fletcher recognizes that you cannot fix the Maple Leafs Organization by applying temporary remedies (signing one guy here and there - Blake). Fletcher is clearly giving the Maple Leafs a new start. He, in my opinion, is using the 'build a strong foundation and let the rest happen by itself' philosophy.

To those who say it's too risky and that Fletcher may be bringing down the Leafs even more I say take a look at the Montreal Canadiens in the late 90's. The Canadiens, then, faced a similar situation to the Leafs, and now look at them! Top of the East.

Many fans, have expressed opinions that they are willing to wait that long for 'a good product'. Congrats to Fletcher. It is not easy being the GM of one of the most insane hockey cities, with unforgiving fans. My suggestion to him is to stick with it. Keep getting new players, and get rid of the old.

At this rate, the Leafs will be the Marlies with all the players we are getting rid of :p. But that's ok... my feeling is that the Leafs would want to do poorly in order to get Tavares.

Fans... we're going to have to wait another good 5 years or so before we will be good again.

The Greatest Contributor to his Sport

My friends. It's time to acknowledge the greatest contributor to his sport: Tiger Woods.

People go to see golf games because of Tiger. They do not go to see the 'brilliant' shots of other players but rather the 'fist pumps', the passion, and intensity of Mr. Tiger Woods. Tiger has essentially, made golf cool to the younger generation while revitalizing the older players' enthusiasm for the game.

A dominate, young player young, and perfect advocate for golf, Woods has single-handidly placed golf into the mainstream. The young man will have become the greatest golfer in the world (if he manages to win around 6 titles in 6 years... which is of course, easy for Tiger).

Not only does he popularize the sport, he rakes in the revenue for different companies. Tiger, one of the most 'money-making' athletes has enabled corporations (Nike) to launch golf-wear and add a new golf section to their merchandise (Nike Golf).

Tiger has started trends: What clubs to buy, what golf wear to wear, and what attitude to bring when golfing. Today, we see the 'Tiger wannabees' trying to imitate Tiger. Clearly Tiger has greatly influenced golf.

Of course we can say people like Muhamed Ali, Michael Jordon, or Wayne Gretzky, or Ro9ger Federer/Rafael Nadal had changed the game. But none have to the degree that Tiger has. He has dominated every aspect of golf - not just one or two areas.

Tiger, is in my opinion, the greatest contributor to his sport.

New Best Goal Keeper?

After the Spain and Italy, quarter-final game, the debate for the new best soccer goal keeper has began.

Iker Casillas, Gianluigi Buffon, and Petr Cech have all been the world's best keepers for the best few years.

Because of Cech's dismal performance against the Turkish offense, Cech can be ruled out as the very top keeper.

The quarter-final game provided massive amounts of insight on the keeper situation. Although throughout the normal time of the game, Buffon made 6 saves and Casillas made 3 saves, the better keeper in many eyes is believed to be Casillas. This is because of his heroics in the very dramatic penalty shots. Casillas stopped the likes of Daniele De Rossi (Roma) and Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), allowing Cesc Fàbregas to step up and send his side through.

Because of these incredible saves, Iker Casillas is believed by many to be the best keeper in the world.

So now it is up to you. Who do you think is the best keeper in the world right now?

Dream Team... USA?

With another Olympics, will the USA prevail in basketball? The team was selected WITHOUT a tryout, as USA hopes to claim gold at the Olympics.

With additions such as Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Jason Kidd, Tayshaun Prince, Carlos Boozer, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Michael Redd, Chris Bosh, and Deron Williams the team looks like they will adopt the 'small-ball' form (this means USA may play with 1 less forward, and adopt a 4 guard system with one center).

This of course, is an attempt to counter the more mobile international teams. But will it be enough? The USA basketball team has been full of egos and has lacked team chemistry.

Will USA once again dissapoint? Some say so, but others disagree. On the one hand, the injection of 'younger' talent compared to the Tim Duncan's and Kevin Garnett's may hurt team chemitsry. These players (Bosh, James, Melo, Paul) have not played with each other as much as other potential squad members would have.

However, others believe that bringing in the new boys will create THE 'Dream Team', that has been so illusive.

Perhaps USA should have brought in some players that play on the same team?

Some selections I must say are very good:

These include Tayshaun (he can defend, attack, is versatile, and can play anywhere)
Dwight Howard (Domination on the boards)
Kobe Bryant (Mr. MVP and a changed man - he passes a lot now)

Some poor selections:

Chris Bosh (he will nto put many points up the board - maybe he will be a 'team player' kind of guy and pass alot, does not add anything defensively)
Michael Redd (why?)

Clearly, the USA is trying to bring in the 'team cohesivenss' - they have scratched out Iverson, and Carter but have kept Kidd (a brilliant passer)

Dream team? Well... the team doesn't have to be great. They will probably win regardless.

Celebrations in Football

I don't know about you, but I have always been impressed and amused by the creativity of the celebrations that NFL players come up with.

Last year the commisioner, Roger Goodell, banned celebrations using the football and endzone. This destroyed chances for many touchdown celebrations that amuse fans. Chad Johnson, celebration legend, was limited to wearing a blazer that said NFL hall-of-famer 20??

Would this amuse you?

Taking away celebrations, I believe take away many marketable campaigns, and can also make viewers decrease. Even though I have tried to watch every Monday Night Football game or Thursday night games, I feel that the excitement decreases, because of the knowledge that the most humorous touchdown celebrations have been cancelled.

I think that Goodell banning these celebrations was not a smart move on his part. What do you guys think?

Basketball Championship Next Year

Boston performed very well this year, and was a deserving champion.
But what about the runners-up, the Los Angeles Lakers?

The Lakers played outstanding throughout the year, and quietly made one the most powerful trades in history:

To Lakers: Pau Gasol
2nd round pick in 2010

To Grizzlies: Kwame Brown
Javaris Crittenton
Aaron McKie
and 2 first round picks (2008 and 2010)

Furthermore, because of the large shadow the Boston Celtics created, the Lakers also had a great season (57-25).

Now the question is will the Laker be able to make another basketball championship in the era or Kobe Bryant. Kobe is now said to be "past his prime" at the age of thirty. Kobe Bryant may never have the chance to compete for the "Larry O'Brien Trophy".

I also believe that the Boston Celtics will not be able to repeat their championship winning season.

Next Year's final:

Hornets/Nuggets vs. Washington/Cleveland

Wellwood to the Canucks

The Canucks recently claimed Kyle Wellwood off waivers. The centreman, who will add skill, and quick-thinking to a thin Canucks lineup, will no longer be available on the free agent market.

The Leafs, clearly could not trade Wellwood, and decided on putting him on waivers. With a terrible season full of injuries, Wellwood was no longer useful to the Maple Leafs.

However, some say that Wellwood is useful to the Leafs. He has shown promise, and at times, has seemed to be worthy on the Leaf's first line. Getting rid of Raycroft and Tucker is understandable, but was giving Wellwood away a smart decision?

Wellwood is full of promise. I think he should have stayed.

Canada Qualifying for FIFA 2010?

This year, Canada's Men's National Soccer Squad has looked particularly strong. Beating St Vincent/Grenadines by a score of 7-1 on aggregate, the Canucks look like a strong contender to occupany the USA (who will most likely advance) to the World Cup.

With Mexico beating a weak Belize team by a socre of 7-0 on aggregate, Canada's chances seem to be weakened (Mexico is in the same qualifying group as Canada along with Jamaica and Honduras). Although Mexico and have been strong, Canada is definetly not a pushover. They have a strong and experienced team and are much different than last time. This so group will most likely be filled with drama and intensity as three potential teams (Canada, T&T, Mexico) will all be looking to qualify for the World Cup.

Led by leaders Centre Attacking Midfield Dwayne De Rosario in Midfield, anchor De Guzman, and Ali Gerba on striker, Canada looks in form. Though Canada has not yet proven itself against the powerhouses of North America, teams are now looking at Canada diffrenlty - as a real opponent and not a pushover.

For those doubters out there check out these facts:

Canada narrowly lost to the USA in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup Semi-Final
Canada finished top of their group in the Cup of Nations (Costa Rica, Haiti, and Guadeloupe were in this group)
Many believe Julian De Guzman is the best player in the CONCACAF
Canada has players from all over the world now, not just MLS: De Guzman (Deportivo), Atiba Hutchinson (FC Copenhagen), Tomascz Radzinski (plays in Greece), and Paul Stalteri (Tottenham)

In closing, we must congratulate the Canadian players for strenghtening the Canadian soccer program and will cheer them on as they look to try and qualify for the World Cup. I believe Canada's chances have never been greater for qualifying for the World Cup.

Sundin. BeLeaf? Or not to Beleaf?

Mats Sundin: Mr. Toronto Maple. Captain Mats. The face of the Leafs. Some dislike him, but most adore him. Toronto fans... it is quite possible that our big Swedish hero will be leaving us next year. Bob Gainey, GM of the Montreal Canadians has already expressed interest to travel all the way to Sweden to negotiate with Sundin and Sundin himself has stalled, awaiting better deals - although GM Cliff Fletcher has already offered him a 7-million 1-yr deal.

Clearly, Sundin's representatives have been busy. They have sought out the New York Rangers, and may even be willing to talk to Gainey. Also, although the chance is slim, Sundin may choose to retire.

So we are left with two scenarios:

Will Sundin leave Toronto or will he stay?

Sundin leaves:
Will always be remembered as a Leaf, who left for one season to be on a winning team (possibly the Stanley Cup?). Will NOT be booed when he faces the Leafs - we have too much respect for him. Toronto will be free to start fresh and rebuild around a new, perhaps stronger leader.

Sundin stays:
Sundin will be a part of the rebuilding program - once again, sacrificing himself for the organization (he has offered to lower his contract to try and get good players for the Leafs, and called free agents/possible new players and attempted to persuade them to join Toronto). And he will be showered with glory and recognition as the man who 'stuck with his team to the bitter end'.

Either way, Sundin, I believe is in a good position. If he leaves, fans will not turn on him, and if he does not leave, fans will love him even more. But what does Sundin want? Every player - at least they say so - wants to win the Stanley Cup (THAT is the main purpose). Sundin, has to do what is best for him - he must push aside everyone else and do what he must do.

Clearly, I am biased as I greatly respect Sundin. But, personally, I think it's best for him to move on.

Please post something, it'd be really nice to hear from you guys.

Predictions for the Euros

This Euro has been filled with plenty of upsets, surprises, dramatics, and brilliant plays. But who would have thought of the final four being: Germany, Spain, Turkey, and Russia??

Of course it seemed easy to choose the Dutch over Russia, and Croatia over Turkey, but that has not happened. Additionally, Germany started off extremley poorly but managed to defeat a very much 'in form' Portuguese team.

The only team who has played consistently, has been Spain. Their strikers, Torres and Villa have delivered and have not dissapointed. The defense, anchored by Puyol, with Ramos and Capdevilla pushing on the wings has provided versatility and several options for the attack. And their midfield, controlled by the likes of Xavi, Silva, Iniesta (who seem to be switching positions the entire game - showing the team's chemistry and cohesiveness) and Senna anchoring the midfield, Spain has dominated every game, showing they are the team to beat.

Even their subsitutues, Fabregas and Xabi Alonso have dominated on the pitch, showing Spain's depth on the bench.

So who will win? Will it be another upset in the Semi-final round? My answer is no. Spain and Germany will meet in the final. Both Titans will battle it out.

Spanish defense is stronger, goalie Casillas is stronger than 'Lame Hands', Spanish midfield has chemistry, and an in form Daivd Villa and Torres will trouble the 'efficient' German defense.

But Germany also has many powerful weapons, including the likes of Phil Lahm, an attacking wingback (who in my opinion is better than both Ramos and Capdevilla). Germany also has Podolski, the young, and well-positioned midfielder.

However, Spain is much more mobile than Germany, while Germany will most likely dominate on set plays (Ballack, Klose, Mertesacker, and Metzelder all have height advantages over any Spanish player).

My prediction: Spain takes it, in regular time, by 2 goals

NFL Players and the Law

Why do Nfl players get in so much trouble with the law?

Michael Vick (Atlanta Falcons?) - Dog Fighting Ring
Adam "Pacman" Jones (Dallas Cowboys) - Strip Club Incident
Chris Henry (Cincinatti Bengals) - Substance Abuse
Odell Thurman (Cincinatti Bengals) - Substance Abuse
Ray Lewis (Baltimore Ravens) - Murder?
Rae Carruth (Former Carolina Panthers Recevier) - Killing his pregnant girlfriend
Mark Ingram (Former G-Men Receiver) - Grand Theft Auto
Albert Haynesworth (Tenessee Titans) - Stepping on someone's head
Javon Walker (Oakland Raiders) - Broken Orbital Bone in a fight
Dawyne Jarret (Carolina Panthers) - Driving While Impaired
Jevon Kearse (Tenessee Titans) - Driving Under Influence
Marshawn Lynch (Buffalo Bills) - Hit and Run
J.J. Arrington (Arizona Cardinals) - Fight in Nightclub
PATRIOTS VIDEO TAPE SCANDAL

this is a short list on the long assortment of violations done by football players and their clubs.
So now I ask you: Why are there so many law violations with football?
Will they ever stop? and if they can when?

Cristiano Ronaldo

Where is the Portuguese star going to land?

First is Manchester United.... Next is Real Madrid. Both these teams are large footballing clubs.

Ronaldo has expressed his anxiety to Manchester United, and has repeatedly told reporters that he would like to see himself move to Real Madrid.
Madrid are hoping that the English Club will waive their decision of not letting Ronaldo go anywhere. Besides who can resists 80 million pounds? This offer, if agreed upon, will break the largest transfer fee ever of 46 million euros (Zidane Transfer from Juve to Real).

Real Madrid have supposedly set up a deadline for the acquisition of Ronaldo. July 7th will apprarently be the last day that Real Madrid offer 80 million pounds for Cristiano Ronaldo

If someone were to offer you 80 million pounds for a soccer player, the best in the world, would you accept?

Raptor Trade Rumor?

O.K.

So Indiana is looking to trade its key-forward, Jermaine O'Neal. The Toronto Raptors are looking to acquire this star, but are they willing to give up too much?

To Toronto:
Jermaine O'Neal

To Indiana:
T.J. Ford
1st Round Pick (17th)
Rasho Nesterovic

Raptors.... What are you thinking?
Jermaine O'Neal has missed 122 games over the last four years, mostly because of a troublesome left knee. His contract is equal to the gross national product of Equador. (This means his salary is alot). And Trading the first round pick? Why? when the draft is so deep this year... There is the possibility of drafting Georgetown Star Roy Hibbert.

Raptors this is a bad trade

Netherlands Vs. Russia (Euro 2008)

The Dutch winning streak came to a dissapointing close against the Russians in the Euro.

Not since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the thawing in the Cold War or the break up of the Soviet Union has Russia threatened the latter stages of a major international football tournament. The last time was 1988, when in the midst of Glasnost and Perestroika the USSR was defeated by Holland in the final of the European Championships by Marco Van Basten's wonder goal. Revenge was dished out in kind Saturday night however as a young, aggressive Russian side produced a brand of breathtaking attacking football to knock the now Van Basten led Netherlands out of Euro 2008. What's more, the architect of Russia's victory was Guus Hiddink – a Dutchman.

The truth is though that the Russians have been coming for a while now, their success in reaching the semi finals in Switzerland and Austria is something that has been threatening to happen for a number of years now. Russian football is a growing force on the international scene, fuelled by the millions produced form the harnessing of the countries great natural resources and handled by the supremely rich class known as the oligarchs. The Russian game is awash with cash, and substantial investment has gone into many of the sides competing in its domestic championship. We have seen just this season the impact that Russian sides are now having in Europe with the outstanding victory of Zenit St. Petersburg in the UEFA Cup final in Manchester just under two months ago. This came on the back of CSKA Moscow's triumph in the same competition in 2005.

So what does this mean? It means the Dutch were greatly outplayed. The Van Basten side, with the substitutions of Van Percy and others, were greatly ineffective. And the Dutch, who are known to be a team with great pace, were greatly outclassed and outpaced. The Dutch, recently just dropping out of the top 10 rankings in the world, have clearly been descending into a downward spiral. On the other hand, the Russians, have been rising.

Perhaps it is time for a change in football scenery? Will the Russians win the Euro, and be a Cinderella story like the Greeks? And what changes will occur for the Dutch? (Robben did not receive any playing time...)

However, it is safe to say that both countries have large futures ahead. With rising stars in both countries, both Russia and the Dutch look to perform in the upcoming World Cup in Africa.
